FWIW, mechanical connections of dissimilar metals can(and do) form non conductive layers of oxides................That ITT "goo" used to be used for all ground and lightning suppression connections, and some RF connections on communications towers in this area as well as telephone line junctions.

I know the newer wires that got strung in my neighborhood are aluminum, and that in home wiring when using aluminum something called Noalox (I think that's a brand name) is used at junctions for the purpose of preventing the oxides you mention. I never would have guessed it was applicable to communications, but I suppose where there's wire, there could be a need.

I was given some of that aluminum stuff wadded in some cellophane wrap to use and it looked like black silicon caulk, but I have no idea what it was. I believe that the dielectric grease prevents not only moisture from contacting the connection, but also the other required ingredient for oxidation; air and the oxygen it contains. And don’t smear half a tube in there.
